What Hardware Do We Use?

The hardware available to the CG artist becomes faster and more powerful with every day that passes. As a result you can guarantee that any new hardware you purchase will be out of date before you even get it home! I have long believed that the artists imagination and familiarity with the software are far more important factors than the speed of the hardware but, for what its worth, below you will find details of the hardware I use.

Powermac G5Apple PowerMac G5

CPU: Quad 2.5GHz IBM G5
Memory: 5GB DDR RAM
Hard Disk:
2x250GB Maxtor 7200rpm (Striped RAID)
Graphics: Nvidia 6800 Ultra 256Mb
OS: Mac OS X 10.4.8

My most recent investment, I can officially confirm that the PowerMac G5 FLYS! It has shaved hours off of the render time of many of my images. Despite it housing 9 fans, this is also one of the quietest desktops I have used. Opening up the side panel reveals what has to be the most thought-out layout for the inside of a personal computer. Hard drives, memory and graphics card are all easily upgradable without the use of any tools. There are no wires to battle with (as is typical in all other PCs I have upgraded). G5's don't come cheap but if you can justify owning this sort of power then they are worth every penny.

Although expensive, this is one of the best investments I have made. Used in conjunction with my MacBook 17" or, more commonly, my G5, the amount of desktop space created is phenomenal. Gone are the days when I had to scroll endlessly through documents or squint as I tried to add the fine detail to the wallpaper I was working on. This screen is a must for any creative professional, whether an artist, video editor or musician. And if you have a good enough graphics card (and the cash) you can run two on a G5 giving desktop space running at 5120 pixels wide!

Nikon D70sNikon D70S Digital SLR

Resolution: 6.1 Megapixels
Memory: 512MB Compact Flash
Image Format: JPEG or NEF (Nikon RAW)
Notable Features: TTL Fastlight flash, 3fps continuous shooting, 3D colour matrix metering, 5 area auto-focus system, 1/8000 maximum shutter speed

This is the best camera I have ever owned. The results are stunning on auto and presets but the real fun starts when you experiment with shutter and aperture settings. Unlike a film SLR when, by the time you've got the pictures back, you've forgotten what you had tried to do on each shot, with the D70 you can see instantly and learn precisely the effect of your tweaking. In short, this camera goes a long way to making you a better photographer.

powerbook 17 inchApple MacBook Pro 17" Display

CPU: Macbook Pro 17"
Memory: 4GB DDR RAM
Hard Disk: 250GB Maxtor 4200rpm
Graphics: 256MB NVidia
OS: Mac OS X 10.4.9

Simply the most beautiful piece of hardware I have ever had the pleasure of using, the Macbook Pro 17" is both powerful and stunning to look at. The anodized aluminum casing provides rigidity and strength resulting in a feeling of superb build quality. The 17" wide format TFT screen is currently the largest available on a notebook and is ideal for use with programs that rely on numerous palettes like Photoshop. Add to this built-in Bluetooth, wireless 802.11g/b, Firewire 400 & 800 ports, 3.5 hour battery life, DVD burning capabilities and a backlit keyboard and you have a notebook that can genuinely considered as a desktop replacement system.
